American Comics/Girls

I didn’t know the world of comic books as a kid, so seeing stuff as an adult is very exciting. Today, B showed me Hard Boiled by Frank Miller and Geof Darrow published by Dark Horse. It has an obsessive amount of detail:

Which totally blows my mind.

Did any of the ladies out there grow up reading comic books? Also, why (aside from Tank Girl) aren’t there more age/sex/interest oriented American comic books? Am I missing out on another genres that exist but I just don’t know about?

Yeah - Geoff Darrow is INSANE! He was also the main concept desiger on the Matrix films and has another great series with Frank Miller called "Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot" and a new book called Shao Lin Cowboy which is written by the Whachowski (sp?) bros. and is completely great and hillarious.

Comic Recomendations for you :

Classics -
• Dark Knight Returns
• Watchmen
• Ronin

Almost Classics -
• Hellboy
• Sin City
• Madman
• 300 (upcoming film)
• Red Rocket 7 (You would especially dig this)

New Discoveries -
• Y the Last Man
• She Hulk (Super funny)
• Stray Bullets

Lots of great comics out there --
Get readin' . . .

I grew up with Asterix, Tintin and a bunch of comics that I found in this book store I went to all the time that I cannot, for the life of me, recall the names of right now. I do remember looking desperately for more and they were all kind of girly and had some kind of moral story attached to them.

Looks like a synonymous vote for Asterix. I'll be hunting it down and will let you know what I think.

As for you, Eben- clearly you reign supreme nerd and I am glad to know you :)

Asterix is great, but I think some of the good stuff are getting lost in translation. The same comics are translated by different people and come out not that great sometimes ( as I recently found out). I grew up with Asterix, Tintin and amarchitrakatha (Immortal picture tales in hindi) in India. What are the Cartoon Classics of the US ?
